Originally, one can imagine that the act of weaving thread together was cultivated out of necessity. From the basic need to clothe ourselves to the pursuit of adornment in fabrics that identified tribe and status, textile art has come a long way. These days, knowledge passed down from generations long ago provide specific techniques used to weave the garments we wear today. This approach has created an opening away from fabrics simply being used as an identifier in human culture. And if anything, we've created a literal tapestry of history through style alone.
Any form of art is something crafted by someone to either
appeal or extenuate something. If you think about it, curtains and rugs for
instance are perfect examples of this. Look at either of these things; be it a
plain colour to something with symmetry and intricate design, and they either do
just that: appeal or bore us based on the way it was crafted.
Perhaps because it's all around us, people might not think of the way in which fabric is formed as an art form. But much like architecture, it shapes our culture and continues to be prevalent in the way of expression, style and mood.
So what do you think? Do you see textiles as an art form?
